Standing on a monumental cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the Cabo da Roca Lighthouse is one of the most iconic maritime signals in the world. As the Roman poet Lucretius once described, this is where “the land ends and the sea begins” (Onde a terra se acaba e o mar começa).
First lit in 1772, it is one of the oldest lighthouses in Portugal. The current tower, standing 22 meters tall, was completed in 1842. Its powerful beam can be seen up to 26 nautical miles away, guiding ships safely past the treacherous rocks of the Sintra coast.
For cyclists, the ride to Cabo da Roca is a legendary challenge. The route offers winding roads through the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, leading to a dramatic landscape of granite cliffs and coastal flora. The site is marked by a stone monument with the geographical coordinates (38 47 North, 9 30 West), making it a prime spot for a “finisher” photo after a long climb.
