Perched on a strategic hilltop between the estuaries of the Tagus and Sado rivers, Palmela Castle is a monumental fortress that has been occupied since prehistoric times. Its current stone structure was built by the Moors and later conquered by King Afonso Henriques in the 12th century. For centuries, it served as the headquarters of the prestigious Order of Saint James (Ordem de Santiago).
The castle is a fascinating architectural complex that includes medieval fortifications, a 14th-century keep (Torre de Menagem), and the ruins of the Church of Santa Maria. One of its most unique features is the converted convent within the walls, which now serves as a luxury Pousada.
For cyclists, Palmela is both a challenge and a reward. It marks the northern gateway to the Arrábida Natural Park. The climb to the castle is steep, but it offers what many consider the best views in the region: to the north, you can see Lisbon and the Sintra mountains; to the south, the turquoise waters of the Sado estuary and the Tróia Peninsula.
