Perched on a high limestone ridge, Penela Castle is a key fortress of the former “Coimbra Line,” a defensive network that protected the Mondego valley during the Christian Reconquista. Built in the 11th century after the conquest of Coimbra, it has witnessed centuries of royal history and was once a favorite residence of the Portuguese nobility.
The castle features a unique, irregular polygonal layout that follows the rugged terrain of the hill. Unlike many “restored” castles, Penela retains a raw, authentic medieval atmosphere. Inside the walls, you will find the Church of São Miguel, a beautiful temple dating back to the 12th century. The castle’s most striking feature is the Clock Tower (Torre do Relógio), which offers one of the most breathtaking views in Central Portugal, stretching towards the Serra da Lousã.
For cyclists, Penela is a fantastic destination. The town is a gateway to the Schist Villages (Aldeias do Xisto) and offers a mix of challenging climbs and rewarding descents through olive groves and limestone landscapes.
