Built to commemorate the Portuguese victory over the Castilians at the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385, Batalha Monastery is a breathtaking display of Manueline and Flamboyant Gothic styles. It took over a century to build (from 1386 to 1517), involving the genius of multiple master architects.
The complex is famous for its intricate stone carvings that look more like lace than rock. Highlights include the Founder’s Chapel (Capela do Fundador), where King João I and Philippa of Lancaster rest, and the legendary Unfinished Chapels (Capelas Imperfeitas)—roofless octagonal structures that offer a unique view of the sky through richly decorated arches.
