Deep within the mystical Mata do Buçaco forest lies one of the most beautiful neo-Manueline buildings in the world. Originally built for the last Kings of Portugal as a royal hunting lodge, the Bussaco Palace Hotel is a masterpiece of stone carvings, grand arches, and stunning azulejo panels depicting the Age of Discovery.
The palace is surrounded by a vast, walled forest planted by the Order of Discalced Carmelites in the 17th century. The park contains hundreds of exotic tree species from all over the globe, serene fountains, and a network of winding paths that lead to secret chapels and breathtaking viewpoints.
Our Experience (A Recurring Favorite!): We have visited this place many times, and it never loses its magic. Riding through the shaded, cool forest and suddenly seeing the ornate towers of the palace emerge from the greenery is an unforgettable experience. It’s one of those spots where the blend of nature and imperial history feels perfectly balanced.
Important for Bike Travelers! ⚠️
-
The Climb: Reaching the palace involves a steady, beautiful climb through the forest. The canopy provides excellent shade, making it a perfect ride even on hot summer days.
-
The Surfaces: While the main road to the palace is paved, many paths within the forest are gravel or cobblestone. A gravel bike or MTB is ideal if you want to explore the deeper parts of the park.
-
Refill & Relax: The terrace of the palace is an incredible spot for a coffee or a glass of Bucaco wine. Even if you aren’t staying at the hotel, you can enjoy the architecture and the gardens.
-
The Viewpoint: Don’t miss the ride up to Cruz Alta, the highest point of the forest, for a panoramic view that stretches all the way to the Atlantic.
Why it’s a Must-Visit:
-
It’s a masterclass in Manueline architecture (the Portuguese Gothic style).
-
The forest has a unique microclimate—cool, misty, and incredibly fresh.
-
It’s a rare opportunity to see a “royal” landscape that has been preserved for centuries.
