Located near the town of Serpins, Cabril do Ceira is a breathtaking natural gorge where the river flows between two towering vertical cliffs. This “natural cathedral” of rock and water is one of the most wild and untouched spots in the region. The water here is famous for its transparency and stunning turquoise hue, especially when the sun hits the bottom of the rocky riverbed.
It’s a place of raw beauty, surrounded by dense vegetation and the sound of the wind echoing through the canyon. For those seeking a deeper connection with nature away from the typical river beaches, this is the ultimate destination.
Our Experience (A Bike Tour Highlight!): We have included this spot in our bike tours many times, and it’s always a “wow” moment for everyone. In the summer, it’s the perfect place for a swim. The water is incredibly refreshing, and diving into the deep pools between the cliffs is an experience you won’t forget. It’s our favorite rewards after a long day in the saddle!
Important for Bike Travelers! ⚠️
-
The Approach: The road leading to the canyon can be a bit rugged and gravelly. It’s perfect for gravel bikes or MTBs. If you are on a road bike, take it slow on the final descent to the water.
-
Wild Spot: This isn’t a commercial beach—there are no bars or lifeguards here. Bring your own snacks and water, and make sure to take all your trash back with you to keep this gem pristine.
-
Summer Swimming: The water stays cool even in the heat of August. The natural pools are deep enough for swimming and even jumping (but always check the depth first!).
-
Quiet Mornings: To have the canyon all to yourself, try to arrive before 11:00 AM, especially on weekends.
Why it’s a Hidden Gem:
-
The dramatic rock formations create a landscape that feels more like a movie set than reality.
-
It’s a true wilderness experience just a short ride from Serpins.
-
The purity of the water is among the best in Central Portugal.
