While everyone is busy exploring the Templar castle, the real engineering marvel of Tomar stretches for 6 kilometers across the valley. The Aqueduto de Pegões was built in the late 16th and early 17th centuries to supply the Convent of Christ with water.
The most impressive section, the Troço dos Pegões Altos, features 58 massive arches and reaches heights of nearly 30 meters. It is a stunning display of Renaissance engineering that has stood the test of time. Walking — or standing with your bike — beneath these giant arches gives you a perspective of scale that photos simply can’t capture.
Important for Bike Travelers! ⚠️
-
The Ride: Located about 3-4 km from Tomar’s city center. It’s a perfect, relatively flat detour from the castle.
-
Cycling Tip: You can ride your bike along the dirt paths that run parallel to the aqueduct. It’s one of the most cinematic stretches for cycling in Central Portugal.
-
The Viewpoint: For the best photos, head to the valley floor to look up at the double-tiered arches.
-
Safety Note: There is a path on top of the aqueduct, but it is narrow and has no railings. Do not attempt to ride your bike on top of the aqueduct — keep it on the ground for safety!
-
Crowds: Unlike the Convent, you will likely have this place almost entirely to yourself.
Why it’s a Hidden Gem:
-
It’s a colossal monument that you can explore for free and without queues.
-
It offers a sense of peace and monumental scale that is rare to find.
-
It’s the perfect spot for a picnic or a break during a long ride.
