The Castle of the Teutonic Order in Malbork is the largest castle in the world by land area and the largest brick building ever constructed. Built in the 13th century by the Teutonic Knights, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Dominating the banks of the Nogat River, the fortress consists of three distinct sections: the High, Middle, and Lower Castles, all enclosed by a complex system of defensive walls and moats.
Walking (or cycling) past its massive red-brick walls feels like stepping back into the Middle Ages. The sheer scale of the fortress is mind-blowing, reflecting the power of the Crusader state that once ruled these Baltic lands.
Important for Bike Travelers! ⚠️
-
Cycling Route: Malbork is a key highlight on the EuroVelo 9 and the Vistula Cycle Route (Wiślana Trasa Rowerowa). The terrain in this part of Poland (Żuławy) is famously flat, making it a dream for high-speed cruising and long-distance touring.
-
The View from the River: For the best photos of the castle, cross the pedestrian/bike bridge to the opposite bank of the Nogat River. The panoramic view of the fortress reflecting in the water is the ultimate “I was here” shot.
-
Bike Facilities: Being a major tourist hub, Malbork is well-equipped. There are bike racks near the entrance, and the surrounding park areas are perfect for a rest.
-
Logistics: The castle is easily accessible by train from Gdańsk (only 30–50 minutes), and Polish trains are very bike-friendly, making this an easy day-trip or a starting point for a bigger Baltic adventure.
