Capela de Nossa Senhora da EstrelaRe
Tucked beneath a natural limestone overhang on the Serra do Poio ridge, near the villages of Poios and Redinha, the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Estrela is one of those places that stops you in your tracks. The altar rests directly on the rock. The stone figure of the Virgin inside is medieval. And the view from the terrace stretches all the way to the Atlantic.
This is a place that works as a destination in itself — a short punchy climb with a serious reward at the top — and equally well as a midpoint stop on longer routes through the serra.
The Chapel ⛪ Hidden in the Rock:
- Built into a natural cave in a sheer limestone cliff — the rock is the back wall, the ceiling, the shelter
- Rebuilt in 1670, the rustic interior features a medieval carved stone figure of the Virgin
- One of the most unusual chapel settings in central Portugal — no tourist infrastructure, no ticket office, no queue
- Annual romaria in May — a pilgrimage tradition alive since the 16th and 17th centuries
The Legend ⭐ A Fisherman’s Promise:
The story behind the name is simple and stays with you. A fisherman caught in a violent storm promised the Virgin that if he survived, he would build a chapel wherever he came ashore. A star appeared and guided him to land. He kept his word. Estrela means star — and that’s how this chapel got its name.
It became a destination for pilgrims from across the region, and the May romaria continues today.
The View 🏔️ Serra do Poio Panorama:
The elevated position at 350 metres on the limestone ridge delivers one of the finest viewpoints in the Pombal area:
- On clear days, visibility extends to the Atlantic coast
- Seven other chapels are said to be visible on the horizon — a detail passed down through generations
- The limestone escarpment drops sharply below, with the deep green Vale de Poios canyon carved by the Anços river
- Mountain ranges, forested hills, and scattered villages in every direction
This is the kind of view where you understand why people have been coming here for centuries.
