Moinhos de Portela de Oliveira: The Balcony of Mondego

Perched on the edge of the Serra do Bussaco, right on the border between the Coimbra and Viseu districts, the Moinhos de Portela de Oliveira offer one of the most iconic views in Central Portugal. This cluster of traditional windmills overlooks the winding Mondego river and the lush forests, marking a historic point where the wind has powered local life for centuries.

Why You Should Visit:

• The High Point of Penacova: Located at an altitude of nearly 500 meters, this is a magnificent viewpoint. You can see the Estrela, Lousã, and Caramulo mountains all from one spot.

• Cultural Landmark: Home to the Vitorino Nemésio Mill Museum, it’s a place where history meets nature. Some mills are beautifully preserved, showcasing the traditional wooden mechanisms.

Our Scouting Report (Bike Tour Experience):

• The Epic Ride: We conquered this spot during our bike tour, and it was the highlight of the day. The climb up from the river valley is serious, but once you reach the “balcony,” the effort is instantly forgotten.

• Atmosphere: It’s a quiet, windy place perfect for a long break. The air here feels different, and the sense of height is incredible.

• Navigation Tip: The roads connecting Penacova and Mortágua in this area are some of the most scenic for cycling, with constant views of the surrounding ridges.
