At 1,993 meters above sea level, Torre is the highest point in mainland Portugal. To reach the symbolic 2,000-meter mark, King João V actually ordered the construction of a 7-meter stone tower on the summit, which still stands there today.
The landscape here is dramatic and alpine—expect massive granite boulders, glacial lagoons, and views that stretch as far as the Atlantic Ocean on clear days. Unlike many jagged peaks, the summit of Torre is a vast, wind-swept plateau. It’s a place of extremes: you can find snow here in winter and cool, thin air in the middle of a scorching Portuguese summer.
Important for Bike Travelers! ⚠️
-
The Epic Climb: This is the most iconic climb in Portugal. There are three main routes: from Seia, Covilhã, or Manteigas. The climb from Manteigas through the Glacier Valley (Vale Glaciar do Zêzere) is arguably one of the most beautiful rides in Europe.
-
Weather Warning: Even if it’s 30°C at the bottom, it can be foggy, windy, or freezing at the top. Always carry a windbreaker or a gilet for the descent—you’ll be going downhill for almost 30 kilometers!
-
The Reward: At the summit, there is a small shopping center where you can buy the famous Queijo da Serra (mountain cheese) and traditional wool stockings. It’s the perfect place to refuel before the long descent.
-
Refill: Keep an eye out for natural springs along the road; the water is icy cold and perfect for refilling your bottles.
Why it’s a Must-Visit:
-
It’s the ultimate cycling challenge in the country (HC – Hors Catégorie climb).
-
The high-altitude ecosystem is unique to this part of the Iberian Peninsula.
-
Standing at the tower gives you a true sense of being at the “top of the world” in Portugal.
