The Seasonal Wonder: Cascata de Quiaios

Tucked away in the lush northern folds of Serra da Boa Viagem, near Figueira da Foz, the Cascata de Quiaios is a beautiful natural waterfall that flows over a steep schist cliff. It is part of a delicate ecosystem where the mountain forest meets the Atlantic influence.

The waterfall is a true “chameleon” of nature. During the winter and spring, after the rains, it transforms into a powerful and roaring white veil of water, creating a misty, magical atmosphere in the forest. However, during the hot summer months, the flow significantly decreases, often becoming a mere trickle or drying up completely, leaving behind a dramatic dry rock face that reveals the geological soul of the mountain.

• The Ride: This is a fantastic destination for a bike trip from Figueira da Foz or Quiaios. The route through the Serra da Boa Viagem offers winding roads with breathtaking views of the ocean and the silver sands of the Atlantic coast.

• The Access: The waterfall is located near the road, but the final approach involves a short walk through a shaded forest path. It’s a great chance to park your bike and enjoy the silence of the woods.

• Timing is Everything: If you want to see the waterfall in its full glory, plan your visit between November and April. If you visit in summer, go for the stunning forest ride and the cool mountain air, but don’t expect a massive splash!

• MTB & Gravel Paradise: The forest trails around the waterfall are a dream for off-road enthusiasts, offering a mix of technical sections and scenic fire roads.
