Perched at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters on the slopes of the Serra da Lousã, the Baloiço do Trevim is a legendary stop for mountain explorers. While the absolute summit of Trevim reaches 1,205 meters, the swing is perfectly situated on a dramatic ridge to offer a literal “floating” sensation over the deep green valleys below.
On clear days, the view is endless, stretching across the rolling green peaks of the mountain range to the horizon. It’s a place where the air is thin, the wind is fresh, and the silence of the high altitudes is only broken by the distant bells of mountain goats or the whirring of the nearby wind turbines.
Our Experience (A High-Altitude Legend!): We’ve been here many times during our tours, and reaching Trevim is always the ultimate crowning achievement of the ride. There is something magical about swinging into the open sky after a long, grueling climb. It’s the perfect spot to reset, take the most iconic photo of your trip, and realize how far you’ve come.
Important for Bike Travelers! ⚠️
-
The Challenge: The climb to Trevim is serious. Whether you come from Lousã or Castanheira de Pêra, be prepared for significant elevation gain. Your legs will feel it, but the pavement is good and the scenery is world-class.
-
The Weather: This is a high-mountain environment. Even if it’s hot at the bottom, it can be chilly, windy, or misty at the top. Always bring a light windbreaker or gilet for the descent.
-
Clear Skies: For the best experience, aim for a clear day. When the sky is blue, you can see the Atlantic coast in the distance. If it’s cloudy, you might literally be swinging into the clouds, which is also a surreal experience.
-
Wind Turbines: You are at the heart of a wind farm. The massive turbines add a futuristic, almost sci-fi feel to the rugged landscape.
Why it’s a Must-Visit:
-
It’s the highest point in the region—the ultimate cycling goal.
-
One of the most “Instagrammable” spots in Portugal, but with a raw, natural soul.
-
The descent from Trevim back to Lousã is one of the longest and most exhilarating in the country.
