The Castelo de Soure is a rare and precious example of a medieval fortress built on flat land. Founded in the 11th century and later granted to the Knights Templar (it was one of their first headquarters in Portugal), the castle played a vital role in the defensive line of the Mondego river. Today, its well-preserved walls and towers stand as a testament to centuries of battles and history.
What truly sets this castle apart is its role in the community. It’s not just a monument; it’s a vibrant cultural space. The inner courtyard often hosts medieval fairs, concerts, and local festivals, transforming the ancient stone walls into a lively stage.
Our Experience (Atmosphere & Community!): We’ve been here many times during our tours, and the energy of this place is incredible. While the architecture is impressive on its own, seeing the castle during a local celebration is a whole different experience. The blend of medieval history and modern festive spirit makes it one of the most welcoming historical stops on our routes.
