Hidden higher on the cliffs of Cabo Mondego, above its younger successor, stand the evocative ruins of the original lighthouse — the Farol Velho. Built in the early 19th century (exact date debated, but likely around 1828-1830s), this was one of Portugal’s earliest coastal beacons, guiding ships along the treacherous Silver Coast before being decommissioned when the current Farol do Cabo Mondego was constructed in 1858.
Now, over 160 years later, the old lighthouse stands as a haunting monument to maritime history — weathered stone walls open to the sky, overtaken by wild grasses and coastal vegetation, yet somehow even more beautiful in its abandonment. The site offers an atmosphere that the operational lighthouse below simply cannot match: solitude, mystery, and the raw passage of time.
Our Experience (A Hidden Sanctuary!):
We stumbled upon Farol Velho almost by accident during an exploratory ride, and it instantly became one of our most cherished spots on the entire coast. There’s something deeply moving about standing among these ruins — imagining the lighthouse keepers who once tended the flame here, the ships they saved, the storms they witnessed. The silence is profound. The views are breathtaking. And best of all? You’ll likely have it completely to yourself. It’s the kind of place that makes you pause, breathe deeply, and feel genuinely connected to history and nature.
Important for Bike Travelers!
🚴♂️ The Route:
- Paved road access leads directly to the ruins — easier to reach than you’d expect for such a hidden gem
- The approach is via a narrow asphalt road that continues uphill past the main Cabo Mondego lighthouse
- All bike types welcome: Road, gravel, MTB — the paved access makes it accessible to everyone
- Short climb from the main lighthouse area, but entirely rideable
- Distance from main lighthouse: ~500-800 meters uphill on pavement
🏔️ The Terrain:
- Paved all the way to the ruins — no off-road challenges
- The climb is moderate but steady — a good warm-up for the legs
- Once there, the ruins sit on relatively flat ground
- Reward: Near-total isolation and 360° views even better than the operational lighthouse below
🌿 What You’ll Find:
- Crumbling stone walls — the lighthouse tower is mostly intact structurally but open to the elements
- Wild coastal vegetation reclaiming the site — herbs, grasses, wildflowers in spring
- Absolute silence except for wind and distant waves
- No facilities, no signs, no crowds — pure, untouched atmosphere
🌊 The Views:
- Even more dramatic than the main lighthouse due to higher elevation
- North: Endless Atlantic stretching toward Quiaios and beyond
- South: The entire Figueira da Foz coastline, Buarcos, and the Mondego estuary
- West: Uninterrupted ocean horizon — perfect for sunset contemplation
- On clear days, visibility extends for dozens of kilometers
☕ Plan Accordingly:
- No services at the ruins — bring water, snacks, and anything you need
- Nearest facilities at main lighthouse area or back in Buarcos/Figueira da Foz
- No shade: Bring sun protection in summer; can be brutally exposed
📸 Photography Paradise:
- Golden hour magic: Sunrise and sunset both spectacular
- The contrast between ancient ruins and wild nature is photographer’s gold
- Storm watching (from safe distance) is unforgettable
- Tip: Shoot through the ruined window frames for dramatic ocean-framed compositions

- Tell someone your plan if cycling here alone — it’s remote
- Leave no trace: Pack out everything you bring
💡 Pro Tip:
Visit early morning on a weekday for the most magical experience. The light breaking over the Atlantic, illuminating the ruins with golden warmth while morning fog still clings to the valleys below — it’s a moment you’ll never forget. Bring a thermos of coffee and just… exist there for a while.
