Sweet Chestnuts of the Mondego Valley

If you find yourself cycling along the banks of the Mondego River near Coimbra during the autumn season, this forest is a mandatory detour. Tucked away in the lush, shaded floodplains of the river, you’ll find ancient chestnut groves that offer a generous bounty every year.

We have stopped here many times during our bike tours to fill our panniers. It’s a perfect spot for those who enjoy blending active cycling with a bit of foraging.

Pro Tip for Foragers: We always roast these back at home. Just make a small slit in the shell and pop them in the oven until they burst open. It’s the ultimate Portuguese autumn comfort food—rich in energy and perfect for muscle recovery after a long day in the saddle.
