Standing tall on a 55-meter-high cliff, the Farol Penedo da Saudade is an architectural icon of the Silver Coast. Built in 1912, this 32-meter square tower has guided sailors through the treacherous Atlantic waters for over a century. Its name, “Penedo da Saudade” (Rock of Longing/Nostalgia), reflects the poetic and sometimes melancholic beauty of the Portuguese soul and its deep connection to the sea.
The lighthouse is surrounded by dramatic limestone cliffs and wild coastal vegetation. The real magic, however, lies in the views: from the rocks nearby, you can watch the powerful Atlantic waves crashing against the shore, creating a mist that often catches the light in spectacular ways.
Our Experience (A Tour Legend!): We’ve ridden to this lighthouse many times, and it never gets old. There’s a specific feeling of freedom when you reach this point after cycling through the pine forests. Standing on the cliffs near the lighthouse, feeling the ocean breeze and watching the horizon, is the ultimate reward. It’s a place that makes you feel small in the best way possible.
Important for Bike Travelers! ⚠️
-
The Route: The lighthouse is a key stop on the Estrada Atlântica—one of the best cycling routes in Portugal. The path is mostly flat, paved, and separated from car traffic, making it a “cycling highway” with incredible views.
-
The Cliffs: Be sure to leave your bike for a moment and walk out onto the rocky viewpoints adjacent to the lighthouse. The perspective of the coastline stretching toward Nazaré in the south is breathtaking.
-
Wind Factor: Being on a prominent cape, it can get very windy. Check the wind direction before your tour; riding with a tailwind along the Estrada Atlântica is pure bliss, but a headwind can be a challenge!
-
Pit Stop: The nearby village of São Pedro de Moel is one of the most charming coastal towns in Portugal, perfect for a coffee or a quick lunch before continuing your journey.
Why it’s a Must-Visit:
-
It’s one of the most beautiful and well-maintained lighthouses in the country.
-
The geological formations of the cliffs offer a raw, powerful contact with nature.
-
Perfect connectivity: it’s the ideal “mid-point” for rides between Figueira da Foz and Nazaré.
